3 Ways to Take Advantage of Your Dental Insurance Before Year’s End

Dental insurance form on a table

The end of the year is fast approaching—as fast as it seems like it may have gone, 2023 will soon be over, and 2024 is knocking on the door. If you have dental insurance, that means that you only have a few more months to make use of your coverage before it resets.

It’s estimated that people leave over 100 billion dollars’ worth of insurance coverage on the table every year. If you want to get all the coverage you’re paying for, here are a few tips to help you do that.

Deductibles and Restorative Care

In many cases, deductibles for a dental plan need to be paid before getting any kind of restorative care like fillings or dental crowns. Once this deductible is paid, you won’t have to pay it again until your plan resets at the end of the year.

If you’ve already paid your deductible this year, you may want to get any restorative treatments you need before it resets.

Maxing Out Your Annual Maximum

If you’re primarily familiar with health insurance, the concept of an annual maximum may seem new to you. This is an aspect of dental insurance plans that aren’t often found in other kinds of them.

Your dental insurance plan will likely only pay out a certain amount in a given year. Once you’ve met that annual maximum, you’ll have to pay out of pocket for the rest of your dental care.

If you wait until next year to get dental care, you may leave money on the table from this year and risk exceeding your annual maximum in the next. Instead, you should make use of your dental benefits now so that you can spread out your dental care, making it less likely you’ll have to pay for anything out of pocket.

Get Your Second (Or First) Cleaning

Insurance companies will often afford you two 100% covered checkups each year, meaning that you can have a dentist look at your teeth for no charge. Furthermore, this often has nothing to do with whether or not you’ve met your deductible.

If you’ve only gotten one checkup this year, or none at all, you can take advantage of your benefits by scheduling one before December ends.
