Can I Wear My Dentures All the Time?
February 9, 2023
Your dentures probably make you feel pretty good, allowing you to eat and talk as if you weren’t missing any teeth at all. In fact, they may make you feel so good that you never want to take them off!
Maybe that’s why so many people make the mistake of never removing their dentures. Unfortunately, this can cause a few unpleasant issues. Here’s when you ought to take off your dentures, and why removing them is important.
Can I Wear My Dentures All the Time?
Removable dentures rely on the gums for stability, which puts a lot of pressure on the soft tissue in your mouth. At some point, your gums need a break. That’s why it’s recommended that you take out your dentures before bed and let them soak in a dental cleaning solution overnight.
By letting your dentures soak, you not only give your gums an opportunity to rest, but you take that chance to disinfect your oral appliance, which can prevent you from developing an infection.
When Should I Take Out My Dentures?
While the ideal time to take out your dentures is overnight, there are other instances where it may be a good idea to remove them. For instance, if you find that your gums are inflamed or that you’ve developed a sore spot, you may want to take out your dentures to give them time to breathe. If you don’t, those problems could get substantially worse.
Additionally, if you find that your dentures are overly loose, or that you’re using an excessive amount of dental adhesive just to keep them in place, it may also be a good idea to ask your dentist for a relining and take out your dentures until they see you.
The Benefits of Dental Implants
If you really don’t like taking out your dentures, you can always ask your dentist about all-on-4 dental implants. As the name suggests, your dentures can be permanently attached to a series of dental implants that are secured to your jaw. Your dentures will be able to use the jaw for support, meaning you won’t have to worry about a poor fit or your gums getting sore.
